A peculiarity of the city of Willemstad is
that it is divided in two parts by the
channel giving acces to the harbour and bay.

opened every time to give free passage to
vessels to and from the harbour.

They are named Otrabanda" Punda and
Scharloo".
Otrabanda is the most populated and also
biggest residential part of the city whilst Punda
is the commercial and Scharloo the finest and
nicest residential district.
The island is considered one of the heal-
thiest places of this region with a fair hot
climate tempered by refreshing breezes. In the
last years there have not been any epidemies.
Rain is very scarce and drinking water is
stored in tanks.
