HISTORY. The Spanish Main was discovered by Columbus,
who crossed over to what is now Venezuela, after setting foot
on Trinidad for the first time, in 1498. Alonso de Ojeda coasted
along it in the following year and, having obtained a grant of
the district from Cape Vela to the Gulf of Darien in 1508, founded
