There is no direct importations from Holland-, but I think
that commerce could be rendered more active, by establis-
hing correspondence with Holland: There is a fair field
for consumption of articles manufactured in Amsterdam
and Rotterdam: such as cheese, butter, gin in demi-
jons, and in cases of 12 flasks. Potatoes, onions, and
other articles, in the provision line, would likewise meet
with ready sales, but I have to observe, that sales are
generally effected, on a credit of about four months.
Our articles of exportation are as follows: Mahogany,
fustic, lignumvite, hides, tobacco, wax, honey, turtel-
shell, & c. c., but it would require some lime to collect
an assorted cargo of the above mentioned articles.
Duties on importations are calculated at 30 pCt., on
prices fixed by the Custom House tarriff, payable in 60
days, in Dominican Currency, at the Exchange established
by the Government; which at times differs with that of
the commercial rate; by which operation...”
