en derzelver natelatene betrekkingen wordt ver-
zwolgen.
Natuurlijk ontstaat hier de vraag: welk voor-
deel vloeit uit het bezit dezer koloniën voor
Nederland voort, om de besteding dezer sommen
te billijken?
Nederland trekt geene producten uit de drie
laatstgenoemde der boven bedoelde eilanden en
zendt er evenmin goederen heen! De voortbreng-
selen van Si. Eustatius en Si. Martin bestaan
in eene geringe hoeveelheid suiker en yams; de
rum, batatten etc., die zij opleveren, zijn niet noe-
menswaardig ; Si. Martin heeft ook zout; het
eiland Saba levert niets en kost niets, dus behoeft
het niet in den kring mijner beschouwing te ko-
men. De genoemde producten worden nimmer in
eenige Nederlandsche bezitting, maar integendeel
steeds in de naburige vreemde koloniën of aan de
Noord-Amerikanen verkocht, zoo als het ook eenig-
lijk de Engelschen, de Noord-Amerikanen, de Zwe-
den en de Denen zijn, die de onzen voorzien van
alles,...”

BESTUUR.
Tous les projets philantropiques sont des chimères,
quand une liberté constitutionnelle ne leur sert pas de
base. Ces projets peuvent servir de texte aux amplifi-
cations oratoires d’honnètes déclamateurs. lis peuvent,
offrir a des ministres adroits lc moyen d’occuper d’une
manière neuve et piquante les loisirs de leur maitre. —■
lis peuvent, en trompant ce maitre, appaiser ses remords,
si le spectacle de la misère publique fait naitre en lui
quelques remords. — Mais ni la classe agricole ni Fagri-
