Discovery
The island was discovered in August, 1499 by Alonso de Ojeda, a navigator who had earlier sailed with Christopher Columbus. He claimed the island for Spain. At the time, it was inhabited by the Arawak
and Carib Indians. The first Spanish Governor was Juan de Ampues. Indian signs are still found at the huge boulders of Ayo, Arikok and in the Fontein Cave. Remnants of their habitations (clay pottery and urns) are found at Santa Cruz, Canashito, Sava-neta and Tanki Flip areas. Many sections of the island have Indian names, such as Guadarikiri, Dai-mari, Andicuri and Kibaima.
